Quinn eyed the first lady and Sadie as they sipped sweet tea at the kitchen table. A mixture of emotions ran through her as she watched them unobtrusively from her position in the doorway. She was glad she was leaving the White House although it was just for a few hours. Even if it was just for a short time to pack her clothes for what was now a three-month stay in the South, leave instructions with the housesitting service, and other odds and ends. She also wanted to stop at Birdie’s house to say good-bye and to see how her aunt was faring. Her clients had been switched to other lawyers, and her replacement at Georgetown University would do just fine, so there was no concern there.

Guarding the first family and working in the White House had been a long-held dream. The way things were going or not going, the reality was more like a nightmare. Had Puff been right years ago when he’d said she wasn’t cut out for this kind of job?

She’d always been a mover and a shaker, but these days she was almost immobile. She missed going to the gym, missed running early in the morning. She missed her students and her clients. She missed the routine of her life. Secretly, she agreed with the first lady. You really were a prisoner if you lived or worked in the White House. With just a few days under her belt she already knew that this would never be a life of her choosing. She also understood the first lady’s feelings and felt sorry for her.

Quinn was shaken from her reverie when the first lady said, “There you are, dear. So you’re leaving us?”

“Just for a few hours, ma’am. I should be back by dinnertime or shortly thereafter; then Sadie can do what she has to do. You aren’t upset that I’m leaving, are you?”

“No, dear, not at all. Sadie has promised to take her gun apart and show me how it works. I have a little Derringer in my dresser drawer. Jimmy Jaye bought it for me one year for my birthday. I keep it in a pair of rolled-up socks,” she whispered for their benefit.

Quinn nodded. How had the Secret Service missed that? “Sadie, may I talk to you for a minute?”

“No, no, don’t get up, Sadie. I’m finished with my tea, and I’m going back to my room to finish the last of my packing. I’m going to do a little painting afterward, so you girls just talk all you want.”

“How much time will you need, Sadie?” Quinn asked as she waved good-bye to the first lady.

“Two hours tops. John’s out of town on a case, so I just have to pack and turn down the heat. Take all the time you need. I’ve got it all covered,” Sadie said, waving her arms about. “I might even whip up something for dinner. Mrs. Jaye seems to like my cooking. I’ll save you some. Quinn?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to see Alex?”

“I don’t know.
